What is compostable packaging?

Our compostable shipping mailers are made from a combination of cornstarch, PLA (vegetable-based plastic material) and PBAT (composting co-polymer). If these sound like they'd be great ingredients for a cake, they're not. But the worms love 'em.

Is compostable packaging biodegradable?

All compostable items are technically biodegradable, but biodegradable items are not always compostable. Both break down in the presence of microorganisms, fungi, or bacteria. However, items that are certified 'compostable' through Australian standards or elsewhere, will breakdown without toxicity within a given timeframe. The same cannot be guaranteed for anything labelled as 'biodegradable'.
